CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Two More Visitors at the Inn

Miss Pepper came to the caravan, just as the four children were getting up to go. She looked sharply at Snubby, fearing that he might be wearing his dreadful clothes - but he was still in his bathing trunks. The old clothes were on one of the bunks.

“You can throw those away, Snubby,” she said. “See, here are your own things, washed and cleaned up. Please put them on.”

“Can’t I come in to lunch like this?” said Snubby, looking down at himself.

“No,” said Miss Pepper definitely. “Diana, how brown you are getting! Did you have a nice morning?”

They went off together talking. Barney had been thinking deeply, and now he turned to Snubby and Roger. “I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a walk over to the fishing jetty this afternoon, and see if we can spot Morgan the Cripple, and perhaps talk to him,” he said. “I’d like to see what kind of a fellow he is - and wouldn’t I like to know what he’s mixed up in!”

“Good idea!” said Snubby at once. “Do you hear that, Loony? Walkie-walk this afternoon!”

Loony promptly went mad, and raced round the little caravan at top speed, jumping from bunk to bunk, barking.

“Er - Loony,” said Barney, “sorry to disappoint you, old fellow - but you’re not coming with us this afternoon!”

“Why ever not?” demanded Snubby, astonished.

“Use your brains!” said Barney. “If that boy who gave you the letter is there, he’d recognise Loony at once, and, even though you wouldn’t be in bathing things this time, he’d perhaps recognise you if you had Loony with you. But without Loony, and wearing ordinary clothes, I don’t see how he could recognise you.”

“Loony won’t like not coming,” said Snubby gloomily. “And he’ll bark the place down if we leave him in the caravan.”

“Well - we’ll get Di to stay with Miss Pepper this afternoon, and keep Loony with her,” said Barney. “It’s either that, or we leave you behind with Loony, Snubby.”

“Oh, Diana will have Loony all right,” said Snubby. “Stop showing off, Loony please - we know all about your wonderful jumping - look what you’ve done to my bed-clothes, you ass!”

They went off to the dining-room of the inn, and found Diana at the table, and Miss Pepper at the sideboard, putting slices of cold ham on to plates. Snubby went to help her, and Loony at once sat himself exactly below Miss Pepper’s right arm, hoping she might perhaps drop a slice of ham!

Barney told Diana in a low voice what he proposed to do that afternoon, and she was quite willing to stay behind with Miss Pepper and Loony. “We could all three go for a little walk,” she said. “Miss Pepper would like that. By the way - there are two more visitors at the inn!”

“Who?” asked Barney, looking round the table, pleased to see an enormous salad, and mounds of new potatoes. “My word - what a fine
